Impatiently Waiting For Five Guys

20 Jul

So, here’s hoping that I have some good stuff to say today after taking yesterday off! I was fully intending to post yesterday, but after class I was completely brain-dead and exhausted. I ended up napping, eating, and not going to the gym until about 9:30pm. When I got home around 10:45ish, I contemplated posting… but, considering my mind kinda still wasn’t all there, I thought I’d do y’all a favor and just hold off writing until today.

First things first, this morning I made what I consider to be my most delicious oatmeal to-date! It was so sweet and yummy and I want to make it again tomorrow, and the next day, and everyday after that. Okay, I guess that’s a bit excessive. But, I’m definitely enjoying it again sometime in the very near future!

  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cut up apple
  • 3/4 cup soy-milk (plain)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Splenda brown sugar
  • 1 packet Splenda
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

– Put all ingredients into a microwavable bowl and stir them together.

– Microwave for about 3 minutes & 30 seconds, stir again, let cool, and enjoy!

Following breakfast, my Mom and I went to go see Horrible Bosses — which we both very much adored. I thought it was not only funny, but the somewhat far-out storyline was a refreshing change from the more-typical plot-lines of comedies these days! I also can’t refrain from mentioning how much I reveled in the opportunity to stare at my biggest celebrity crush, Jason Sudeikis, for a little under 2 hours. Swoon!!! If you told me I could date any actor in Hollywood, I’d chose him… hands down. He’s handsome, funny, and has this little-boy charm about him. Double swoon.

I went to the gym right after the movie, which was a smart move on my part, considering that my Dad called to let me know that he is picking up Five Guys on his way home from work today!!!!! Okay, so please just indulge me for a moment and let me express my absolute adoration for the magical burger and fries joint that is more formally known as Five Guys. For years, so many of my friends from college had raved about Five Guys, but since I never heard of it before college — or ate it, obviously — I never truly understood why they spoke of it so highly. I mean, I do love me a good burger, but since I considered it another fast-food-type chain and all, I was expecting another McDonalds or Burger King. Bleh. Well, one Sunday morning everything changed when my parents came to visit me up at school, and for some odd reason they forgot to make a reservation at the lovely local cafe we frequent upon their visits. Since we weren’t able to get a table there that afternoon, we decided on something new, casual, and quick. In came Five Guys. It was so yummy and so unlike other fast-food burgers I had, and I literally became obsessed. At the same time, it also left me feeling gross and ill for about the next couple hours. Because of this, I haven’t had it since. But, tonight that’s about to change! I am willingly going to suffice to any stomach pain in exchange for the chance to eat a heavenly cheeseburger and cajun-style french fries. I don’t indulge like this too often… but when I do I make sure as heck it’s gonna be worth it. Bring it on, Five Guys!

Besides impatiently waiting for my Dad to arrive home with the goodies, I have plenty of LSAT homework in store for tonight… which is another reason I’m glad to have gotten the gym out the way. I did a fun and challenging 30′ interval run on the treadmill, followed by 20’on the exercise bike and another abs circuit.

I hope you all are having a wonderful day! Now, if you don’t mind me asking… I’d love to know:

What are your favorite dinner-time indulgences? And, if you could date any celebrity… who would it be?!

Snack Attack!

16 Jul

Last night, after a delicious and filling dinner of Chinese style eggplant with chicken and garlic sauce from our local takeout joint, I retreated back to my room to finish up some last minute LSAT homework since I had class in the AM. Well, the problems — as usual — were long and hard, and I was beginning to feel frustrated and stressed… so I turned to a good ole box of cereal. Now let me preface that cereal is my vice. What may be a chocolate bar to most ladies, is a box of cereal for me. There is no other food that I turn to when I am stressed out besides cereal. Something about that crunch and being able to grab handful after handful out of that seemingly-never-ending box of goodness just gets me. Every. Single. Time.

I mean, I shouldn’t complain too much — it is cereal after all, and it is not junk food by any means. But, what does bother me is my inability to exercise self-control once I have a “snack attack.” I don’t just take out a bowl and pour a serving, I take the whole box and munch munch much. In fact, I munched so much last night that I finished more than 3/4’s of a new box of Post Great Grains: Raisins, Dates & Pecans! After I was finally finished, I checked out the back of the box and realized that my post-dinner-binge was estimated at about 1,000+ calories. Yikes! I’m not one to judiciously count calories anymore — that’s a whole other post, for a whole other time — but, in all honesty, it does kind of bother me to eat that much after already eating a whole day’s worth of meals. I notice that I have these cereal “snack attacks” of epic portions during moments when I am feeling overwhelmed and stressed, and I hope that recognizing that will be a step in right direction towards being able to utilize better self-control. Since I don’t want to totally deprive myself of late-night cereal when I’m really jonesin’ for some, I’m going to instead challenge myself to start practicing portion control. Ah, I can tell this is gonna be a tough feat for me… fingers crossed!

Anyway, this morning I woke up still feeling pretty stuffed from all the cereal (Great Grains is pretty dense), but since I had class I still wanted to fuel up with a hearty breakfast to keep me satisfied throughout the morning. So, I made the totally yummy:

  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 2 packets of Splenda
  • 1/2 cup of blueberries

I mixed everything — but the blueberries — together, and than microwaved it for about 2 minutes. At around the 2 minute mark, I added in the blueberries and continued to microwave it for about another 30 seconds. I prefer to add in the blueberries at the end so that they get to be the perfect amount of mushiness. I found that adding them in the beginning totally turns them into smushed-mush, and adding them after the fact leaves them too hard for my liking. So I guess I like to take the Goldie-Locks approach on this one!

Class went well today, and on my way home I stopped at Starbucks to get a little pick me up before getting on the subway. I wanted a little refresher since I had plans to be extra productive this afternoon. I wanted to get in a good workout and get ahead on my LSAT homework for the weekend because tomorrow is the 21st birthday celebration for one of my very best girlfriends from college, Laura! Laura turned 21 this past Wednesday, but tomorrow a bunch of my best girlfriends are coming into the city and we are going to spend the entire day together! I AM SO EXCITED! I love my college friends so, so much… and it’s been about a month since we’ve all hung out. We are going to enjoy the city during the day, and than do a nice dinner followed by proper 21st style celebrations ;). Because I anticipated my busy day tomorrow I not only got ahead on my homework, but I also put in a little extra time at the gym. Sometimes, when I know I’m going to take off from working out for a day or two I do a little something extra to “overcompensate” in a sense. I did a 30′ steady state run at 6.5, followed by 30′ steady on the elliptical at resistance 5, and than an extra 15 minutes on the stair master at level 8. Usually I just do 60′ of cardio per day, but since I know I will be indulging quite a bit this weekend, I thought the extra 15 minutes wouldn’t hurt. I rounded out my gym time by doing an abs and arm circuit.

I am going to take a break from posting tomorrow so I can enjoy this time with my friends. I hope you all have as wonderful a day as I hope to have (!), but before I go I’m wondering:

Do you ever do a bit extra in your workouts when you know you are going to take a day or two off, and/or when you know you are going to indulge?

It’s Tea Time!

13 Jul

Whoa, it feels like a year since I last posted — and it’s weird that I feel that way considering my last post was around 3pm yesterday! Today went by so quickly; it was almost 8pm when I realized I had yet to post or go to the gym. I’m sure this has happened to many of you out there: you plan all day to go to the gym at a certain time, but then kinda just get caught up in all these little things… and then BOOM somehow 1pm has turned into 8pm. Yep, that sounds exactly like my day.

Well, I guess part of that has to do with the fact that I woke up at around noon today. If y’all listened to me talk about my “Sleepy Tuesday” yesterday, you’ll be happy to hear that I am sleepy no more! I hit the hay around midnight last night (which is super early for me), so I guess that qualifies me as officially well-rested… seeing as I got around twelve hours of sleep. Mmm, sleep.

When I finally got up I enjoyed some oatmeal (yes, oatmeal again) for “brunch.” I decided on a variation of my “Oats-n’-Bananas” yesterday, so I simply did everything the same, besides mixing in an additional cup of frozen strawberries and microwaving the deliciousness for an extra couple of minutes. I felt so rejuvenated this morning that I even forgot to have my morning (or afternoon, in this case) cup of tea or coffee! It wasn’t until around 4pm when I realized I had yet to have my daily intake of caffeine — sooo unlike me.

After mulling around online for a bit I headed out with my mom to run some errands and go to my bi-annual dentist appointment, which may I add I don’t mind at all. Actually, come to think of it I rather enjoy the dentist — how can I pass up that squeeky clean feeling and having extra shiny teeth?

I planned to hit the gym when my appointment was finished, but then my mom suggested we watch this week’s episode of Weeds and True Blood. Clearly we know how I spent the rest of my afternoon. My mom and I went halfzies on a cup of mango flavored Chobani yogurt while we enjoyed the addicting drama Showtime has to offer. Then, once our shows were done she commented on what a gorgeous afternoon it was and mentioned that we should enjoy it by sitting out back. My momma knows me all too well, how could I resist? So we sat out back with our dog, Champ, and they enjoyed some late afternoon sun while I banged out a section of LSAT homework. Okay, I guess I enjoyed some sunshine too. Lemme tell ya, it was my kinda afternoon.

I ended up getting to the gym about an hour after dinner, and did a 30 minute run on the treadmill alternating my speed every 2 minutes from 6.2 to 7 followed by 30 minutes on the stair master at level 7. I rounded out my workout with some squats and lunges and called it a night.

Now I’m off to enjoy some green tea and grapes and do another section of LSAT homework problems before I head upstairs to bed. But, before I go, I have to ask: What shows are you watching this summer? Sweet dreams!

Sleepy Tuesday

12 Jul

Gosh, do you ever have one of those days where you just can’t get out of bed? And then after you snooze your alarm a few times (five today, to be exact), you still can’t shake that sleepy feeling? Well, today is one of those days for me. When I finally got out of bed — which was at 8am, even though I’m supposed to wake up at 7:30am on days when I have LSAT class — I made sure to crank my Bose SoundDock extra loud to get my blood pumping. There’s nothing like some loud music in the AM to really get my eyes open!

On days when I have class I love to make myself oatmeal for breakfast. Oatmeal is my fave on these days, because I know it’ll leave me satisfied and keep me full from the time when I eat my breakfast until the time when I get my afternoon break during class — which is roughly about four hours later. Today I opted for bananas in my oatmeal, and obviously it was delicious!

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup soy-milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 packet Splenda
  • Few dashes of cinnamon

– Place banana horizontally and cut into small circles, and then cut those circles into halves.

– Put all ingredients into a microwavable bowl and stir them together.

– Microwave for about 3 minutes, stir again, let cool, and enjoy!

After gulping down my iced-coffee, I made sure that I was armed-and-ready to stay awake through my class before I left my house. Let me tell you, LSAT class — besides being very long — is also very challenging, which is why I like to be thoroughly caffeinated in order to make sure I stay alert and focused in class. I don’t know what all your personal preferences on caffeine are out there, but I sure as heck love it! I should also mention, that I do get an adaquete night’s rest on most evenings — but on some days, like today — that just doesn’t cut it!

So post-coffee, I take a 5-hour Energy — which absolutely works! I always thought that because their commercials were so hokey, their product must be a sham too — but boy, did they prove me wrong! Then I sip on a Diet Snapple and bottle of water throughout the remainder of class to keep myself hydrated, and pop in a piece of gum (Trident White, my obsession!) whenever I need a little refresher. Something about a fresh piece of gum always perks me up.

Typically when we are given a 10-15 minute break in the middle of class, I snack on a Zone Bar (Fudge Graham today, yum!). Usually, my bar satisfies me until I get back home and usually enjoy a more substantial snack which tides me over until dinner, but that wasn’t the case today! Between my persistent sleepiness and my tummy being hungrier than usual (even after finishing my bar) — the fro-yo shop down the block was beckoning me. I couldn’t say no to such a delicious — and kinda healthy — treat, especially on a day as hot as today when the “real feel” temperature reached 101° in NYC. Long story short, I had the most delectable frozen yogurt I think ever! I swirled together peanut-butter, white-chocolate macadamia nut, and cookies-n’-cream to create which I will now refer to as: absolute perfection.

Due to my unaccounted for lethargic nature today, I did 60 minutes of steady-state cardio on the elliptical today. When I’m not in the mood for anything too fancy, I just make sure I do something. I always tell myself that something is better than nothing!

What do you do to keep your energy up during the day? Also, do you adjust your workouts to account for how you’re feeling — or do you just power through regardless?
