Introducing: Music Mondays!

18 Jul

Music has always been near and dear to my heart! Some of my earliest memories from childhood include listening to classical music with my parents, having the smooth voice of Mr. Sinatra lull me to sleep, and singing along to the country classics of Patsy Cline. My music taste is literally all over the place; you name it and I probably love it! Nowadays, I do most of my listening at the gym — I find it to be the perfect place where I can simultaneously enjoy the music I am listening to and have the music help me push through my workout. With about 6,000 songs currently sittin’ pretty in my iTunes, I often look forward to rocking out to a new playlist each time I hit the gym.

Because I’ve always found that having new songs to download, or simply having a new playlist of old favorites, makes me more motivated to get my workout on… I thought it would be fun to start a new tradition where every Monday I share one of my playlists with you! If you are someone like me, who literally refuses to workout without some sort of sound infiltrating your ears, then I sincerely hope that you will scroll to the bottom of this post and enjoy these fast paced beats during your next workout!

Now, to get back to my day, I didn’t wake up until about noon… which was the perfect excuse for one of my favorite meals: brunch! I whipped up 3 egg-whites and toasted a delicious whole grain roll. Since I’m a huge fan of flavor in general, and the biggest sucker for anything spicy… I obviously took it upon myself to add a little kick to my eggs. Egg-whites are way too boring to be eaten as is, so when they were almost done cooking in the pan I sprinkled in a bit (okay, a lot) of cayenne pepper, some garlic and onion powder, as well as a little oregano to give those babies some much needed flavor. I prefer to add my spices in the pan, rather than once my eggs are on the roll, so that the spices end up more evenly distributed and I end up getting a better bite-to-flavor ratio!

I didn’t make it to the gym until around 9:15pm today, since I spent the majority of my day doing lots and lots of LSAT problems. I actually enjoy going to the gym later in the day, since I find that’s when I naturally have the most energy — and I also don’t mind that the gym is more crowded during those hours. Hello, people watching! I did a 50-minute pyramid interval workout on the elliptical that I sort of made up as I went along, followed by an abs circuit. I ended up kinda having fun with my cardio today, and the intervals made the time fly by — always a plus. I’m hoping sometime this week to start writing out in detail some of my workouts so that I can share those with you as well, but for now, I’m off to read some of the new issue of Cosmo that finally found its way into my mailbox this afternoon. I’m so excited to see Kim on the cover! I’ll leave you all with a little secret — I’m kind of convinced I was a Kardashian in another life. Don’t judge, and enjoy the playlist!

Is listening to music while working out a must for you? And, if so, what is your favorite kind of music to get you through a work out?

Sleepy Tuesday

12 Jul

Gosh, do you ever have one of those days where you just can’t get out of bed? And then after you snooze your alarm a few times (five today, to be exact), you still can’t shake that sleepy feeling? Well, today is one of those days for me. When I finally got out of bed — which was at 8am, even though I’m supposed to wake up at 7:30am on days when I have LSAT class — I made sure to crank my Bose SoundDock extra loud to get my blood pumping. There’s nothing like some loud music in the AM to really get my eyes open!

On days when I have class I love to make myself oatmeal for breakfast. Oatmeal is my fave on these days, because I know it’ll leave me satisfied and keep me full from the time when I eat my breakfast until the time when I get my afternoon break during class — which is roughly about four hours later. Today I opted for bananas in my oatmeal, and obviously it was delicious!

Oatmeal-n’-Bananas

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup soy-milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 packet Splenda
  • Few dashes of cinnamon

– Place banana horizontally and cut into small circles, and then cut those circles into halves.

– Put all ingredients into a microwavable bowl and stir them together.

– Microwave for about 3 minutes, stir again, let cool, and enjoy!

After gulping down my iced-coffee, I made sure that I was armed-and-ready to stay awake through my class before I left my house. Let me tell you, LSAT class — besides being very long — is also very challenging, which is why I like to be thoroughly caffeinated in order to make sure I stay alert and focused in class. I don’t know what all your personal preferences on caffeine are out there, but I sure as heck love it! I should also mention, that I do get an adaquete night’s rest on most evenings — but on some days, like today — that just doesn’t cut it!

So post-coffee, I take a 5-hour Energy — which absolutely works! I always thought that because their commercials were so hokey, their product must be a sham too — but boy, did they prove me wrong! Then I sip on a Diet Snapple and bottle of water throughout the remainder of class to keep myself hydrated, and pop in a piece of gum (Trident White, my obsession!) whenever I need a little refresher. Something about a fresh piece of gum always perks me up.

Typically when we are given a 10-15 minute break in the middle of class, I snack on a Zone Bar (Fudge Graham today, yum!). Usually, my bar satisfies me until I get back home and usually enjoy a more substantial snack which tides me over until dinner, but that wasn’t the case today! Between my persistent sleepiness and my tummy being hungrier than usual (even after finishing my bar) — the fro-yo shop down the block was beckoning me. I couldn’t say no to such a delicious — and kinda healthy — treat, especially on a day as hot as today when the “real feel” temperature reached 101° in NYC. Long story short, I had the most delectable frozen yogurt I think ever! I swirled together peanut-butter, white-chocolate macadamia nut, and cookies-n’-cream to create which I will now refer to as: absolute perfection.

Due to my unaccounted for lethargic nature today, I did 60 minutes of steady-state cardio on the elliptical today. When I’m not in the mood for anything too fancy, I just make sure I do something. I always tell myself that something is better than nothing!

What do you do to keep your energy up during the day? Also, do you adjust your workouts to account for how you’re feeling — or do you just power through regardless?
